VRML model of Temple of Artemis-Aphæa

The model is still in the early stages, even now after many years. It was written using a customised version of PFE (Programmer's File Editor - external link). I also used PFE for writing HTML files, Java and for PERL scripts. However more recently (post 2017?) I have switched to Notepad++ for creating and editing programme files.

The original development of the model was carried out with Netscape 3.0 and Intervista's WorldView 2.0. Later I used Internet Explorer with Cortona and Firefox with Flux Player as my principal browser combinations and tested with Opera/CosmoPlayer and Netscape 4.1/BS COntact. All these are Windows based. I would be interested to hear if anyone has any viewing problems with other browsers, particularly in other operating systems e.g. unix or MacOS

The current version of the Aphaia model has two ViewPoints but can be Walked or Examined or whatever, to taste. It is fairly rudimentary, as yet. The temple has its base, entrance ramp and peristyle. The roof and pediments are temporary stuctures. The inner temple itself is yet to be built and any of the internal roof supports and structures. The detail of column fluting, the pediment sculpture, the doors, the frieze detail have still to be provided by texture-mapping. Since, currently VRML browsers do not implement shadows, this will need to be simulated with textures as well. To complete the model a more convincing terrain and background will need to be provided. The refinements of proportion, mentioned on the preceding page, are not going to be attempted since it has been stated that they are hardly visually apparent.
